Dally then joins the Greasers at the rumble. He later convinces the nurse to let him leave. Dally was maddened that he had to miss the rumble and tells them to 'do it for Johnny,'. Afterwards, Ponyboy and Two-Bit visit Dally in the hospital because Dally had received a few minor burns due to the church fire. We then later find out he did that because he was simply on fire. Ponyboy and Johnny help save the kids, and Dally later helps them however, he hits Ponyboy hard enough to make him fall.

When they return to the church, they find it on fire with seven trapped kids, inside. Later, Dally comes back a few days later after they been hiding and gives Ponyboy a note and treats Ponyboy and Johnny to a fast food place, as the two were basically starving. The church was almost inhospitable however, it was far away [which helps them from being caught by the police, and it also had water for them to drink. He gives the boys a gun and tells them to hop on a train to Windrixville and hide inside an old abandoned church. He then later appears after Johnny killed Bob he was at the club in the bedroom trying to get some sleep. He then promptly gets a Coke thrown at him by Cherry, and leaves. In the second chapter after they go to the movie, he attempts to flirt with Cherry. For example, he told Johnny 'Now that I'm out(of prison), I'm gonna make it my business to get the guy who did that to your face'.ĭally is a tough guy who hangs out with Johnny and Ponyboy. He is mean to many people such as Cherry but it is shown he cares for his gang and treats them like family. Dallas was also treated poorly by his father which contributed to his toughness. He spent three years on the wild side of New York and was arrested at the young age of ten. He had blazing blue eyes which Ponyboy describes as 'cold with all the hatred in the world.' However, in the movie, Dally has brown hair and eyes.ĭallas was hardened from a tough upbringing. Dally didn't like haircuts nor hair oil so his almost white-blond hair fell over his forehead in wisps. In the books, Dallas Winston is said to have an elfish face with high cheekbones, a pointed chin, small, sharp animal teeth, and ears like a lynx. You look out for yourself and nothing can touch you, man.' I can't be certain.'You get tough like me and you don't get hurt. So that too may be my disconnect with this story line. Harpers was The Outsiders, which I never enjoyed all that much myself. I will admit that I'm looking forward to Reagan's story since her favorite '80s movie was Dirty Dancing. I think perhaps I would have enjoyed this story more if it were a standalone story (or I hadn't read the first book), and you can certainly read it that way. So, perhaps some inciting incident could have explained it, but we don't see that. His unwavering respect for and desire to please Hunt seem to come out of nowhere. Overall, I enjoyed Landon the most in this story, but it's hard to reconcile with how much I disliked him in the first book, especially with no real explanation for his transformation. While Sloane and Gabe play a minor role in this book as well, they're seen through Harper and Landon's uncharitable viewpoints, coming across as much weaker and unlikeable characters than they were in the first book. Harper was someone who I liked much more in the first book than this one, and that's unfortunate since she's the main character here. So, the character arc was a bit lacking there.

Somehow, the switch has been flipped and he starts out being a bit more likeable at the start of this book with no real explanation. Landon was an unlikeable, entitled bully in the first book in the series. I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was curious to see how things would go with these two characters, but it just didn't quite work for me.
